New garden visitor - Buckeye

I had a new visitor to my garden today. A Buckeye butterfly. Last year I saw 6 or 7 different types of butterfly visit my butterfly garden but never a Buckeye until today. This is the best photo I could get while it was sunning on the pavers surrounding this bed.

Kinky for Governor - Why the hell not!

What an interesting year we Texans have in store. Looks like Kinky Friedman is going to make it on to the ballot for Texas Governor.

I hope his campaign really stikes a chord with people that not only believe in his message but also those that are disheartened with politics as usual. I'd like to see an independent candidate have a fighting chance for a change. With quotes like this he's bound to get press but it will be interesting to see if the public actually believes in the message instead of just considering it a novelty act:

On gay marriage:

"I support gay marriage. I believe they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us"

For more information on Kinky's quest see www.kinkyfriedman.com or view this entry in Wikipedia.

She said yes!

At approximately 3PM today, Monica, my girlfriend of 11 months, agreed to be my wife. We both enjoy plants and outdoors so we spent the day at the Botanic Gardens enjoying the winter displays. It was to be our "calm before the storm" since we had 3 days of family Christmas events to attend on opposite sides of the city. As the day wore on I tried and tried to find the perfect spot but I was understandably nervous. Just before we left, and I was later told that she had given up on me asking that day, I asked. Yes, I got down on one knee. She didn't hesitate with her answer.

Since we're already overwhelmed with Christmas parties and family gatherings we decided to not discuss wedding plans or make any major decisions for one week.

Thank you Monica for making the happiest day of my life.

Morning Road Surprise

On my way to work this morning, I was greeted with a big freaking rock through my windshield.

I was about a mile or two from the house when a gravel truck pulled out of a freeway construction area and started driving in front of me. Seconds after it pulled onto the road a huge rock (8" diameter) fell off the trailer and bounced into my windshield. No one was hurt but I'll be picking glass out of my clothes and ass (yes, I absentmindedly sat down in the seat full of glass shards) for another few hours.

I get the feeling that there's some reason that I shouldn't be driving. That's the third unavoidable car wreck I've had in the last few years where I had no fault whatsoever. I'm too tired to work that into some kind of reasonably nutty sounding conspiracy theory so I'll just consider myself lucky. I'd prefer to be lucky in other ways though, such as lucky at cards.
